Fitness is important, but many individuals hate the monotony of working out in a gym. In fact, many individuals get so bored by their workout routine that they stop going to their gym altogether. To meet your fitness goals, you need to work out consistently. Fortunately, exercise does not have to be boring. To keep yourself from burning out, consider adding some outdoor workouts to your routine.

Go Running Outside

Running outside can be a fun change of pace if you normally run on the treadmill at the gym. Instead of having to stare at your fellow gym patrons or at the wall, you will be able to jog through a park or through a scenic neighborhood. You will see plenty of interesting sights that will keep you motivated while you are on your run. If you dislike running, a long walk through a local park can be an enjoyable alternative.

Go For A Swim

Swimming is another popular fitness activity that can be done in the great outdoors. During the summer months, find an outdoor lap pool where you can swim. If you live near a lake or ocean, you could even swim there, as long as the conditions are safe. If you are used to swimming inside, remember to wear plenty of sunscreen. You do not want to get a painful sunburn that keeps you indoors until it heals.

An Active Vacation

You could also consider taking an active outdoor vacation. Many people stop exercising when they go on vacation, and they also indulge in rich food. Although you should certainly be able to enjoy your vacation, if you go on an active trip, you will return home without having sabotaged your fitness goals. On your next vacation, consider enjoying a hike or a canoeing excursion.

Outdoor Classes

Another way to enjoy an outdoor workout is to find a fitness class that meets outside. Some yoga classes meet outdoors when the weather permits. There are also boot camp classes that meet outside, often in the early morning. Boot camp fitness classes are intense and challenging, but you will certainly not be bored if you enroll in one of these classes. If you do not like fitness classes because you prefer to work out alone, you can always enjoy some outdoor activities by yourself in a local park or even in the privacy of your own backyard. Once you learn a few basic yoga poses or Pilates moves, you can practice these fitness activities anywhere. If you have been dreading going to the gym because you are sick and tired of your fitness routine, break out of your rut and take your workout outdoors. If you actually enjoy the time you spend exercising, you will find it easier to reach your fitness goals.

-

Expect No Less For Your Kids Than Yourself
It’s easy to fall into the trap of feeding children from the “kids” menu, while we eat from the “healthy” menu. Food from the kids menu is less expensive, and after all — kids can eat anything and not gain weight, right? Obviously that isn’t true. Kids are wired to like sugary, high fat foods, while adults (at least in theory) have a greater capacity to reject unhealthy foods. Reject the traditional kids menu in favor of healthier fare to avoid building bad eating habits.

Enjoy The Outdoors Together
Modern day children are besieged with an array of items to distract them from physical activity. Couple this with the reality that in today’s world, protective parents are less inclined to let kids out of their sight; for very real reasons. These realities make it even more important to spend time with your kids, exploring the great outdoors. There are, of course, many entertaining and simple outdoor activities for kids, or for the more technology-minded, activities like modern day treasure hunting, offer ample opportunity to pique their interest in being outdoors and reaping the health benefits as a by-product of that interest.

Ditch The Television
O.K., this is probably impractical. But there’s ample evidence to support the idea that greater amounts time spent watching television correlates with weight gain. Recent reports on the television viewing habits of younger Americans indicate that the so-called Gen Y’s are forsaking traditional paid television services for alternatives available on the internet. While this doesn’t bode well for the financial statements of broadcast companies, it may work out to help with the ongoing obesity problem. At least if television time isn’t replaced with another sedentary activity.

There are a number of options available to parents hoping to make fitness and nutrition lifestyle habits for their children. It requires some imagination, and its not easy, but with determination, and the application of a few basic principles, there’s success to be had.

The gym is the most common method of working out. But are you making some classic mistakes that will decrease the efficiency and effectiveness of your workout? Check out these common gym mistakes we all make and see if you have any corrections that need to be made.

You’re in autopilot mode: Your brain should be as stimulated as the rest of your body. If you find yourself going through the same routine, same elliptical machine, group classes, and exercise circuits, then it’s time to switch things up.

Too much chit-chat: If you are talking too much, then you are not fully focused on your exercise. If you workout with a trainer or friend who initiates the chatter, you can tell them “Let’s catch up after the session,” or “I really like when our sessions are all about the exercise. It makes me feel strong and focused.” They should get the picture.

You jump right in: Never underestimate the power of a warmup. Even 5 – 7 minutes of cardio and some gentle stretches are enough to ease your body into a workout. You will last longer and feel better the during and in the days following your workout.

Bad gym etiquette: Proper gym etiquette is important for the safety & health of your gym members. Be sure to re-rack your weights, wipe down your machines and equipment, and give people their space when waiting for other machines. Stubbed toes, spreading germs, and invading peoples personal will mark you as a inconsiderate gym member.

Revealing too much: You are at the gym to work on improving your body, not to show it to everyone else. So don’t let it all hang out. It’s important to wear properly fitting clothes (not to big/slouchy or tight/revealing) to the gym for ultimate results.

We are bound to commit some of these common gym mistakes from time to time, but be conscious about them and try to correct them when they happen. This will keep your workout and progress on track and keep you in good graces with the rest of your gym community.

The record breaking temperatures and nation-wide heat waves are enough to stiffle anyone’s workout regimen. You can still get fit, be cool, and have fun with pool workouts. Pool workouts are a great way to combine your time with family and friends and without missing a workout. Water is one of the best fitness tools: It provides resistance, which strengthens muscles and boosts cardio intensity. It also supports some of your weight, making workouts easier on joints and reducing injury. This pool workout from Gaby Reece, is a great way to get started. So jump in to your next pool workout this weekend!
