Kids Cooking Club: A Saturday of Healthy Fun!

Cooking can be a fun, healthy activity that entertains the kids for the summer.  I’ve integrated some more kid friendly activities to entertain my 9 year old niece (almost) and my 10 year old cousin for the summer.  I wanted “Aunt Té” time to reflect the SPL belief that health, fitness and nutrition can be added to your regular schedule in an affordable way…You just have to look for it.

This weekend, I, Aunt Té, took a trip to the local WholeFoods Coral Gables, FL store for the new, fun, and exclusive club just for children.  The Kids Cooking Club of Whole Foods is a 1-hour class that teaches kids the importance of cooking and nutrition through a hands-on, how-to demonstration of kid-friendly recipes.  The Kids Cooking Club is lead by nationally recognized culinary expert, “The Short Chef, who has dedicated the last 5 years of his career to nutrition education for kids.

WholeFoods Kids Cooking Club earns extra SPL points for the FREE admission.  But early registration is required.

FUN APPITIZERS!

The recipe topic for the week was FUN APPITIZERS!  The kids cooked The Healthy Pineapple (served with fresh fruit and vegetables) and Chef served up the Tropical Fruit with Honey-Yogurt Sauce (aka The Pineapple Sandwich) (recipes below).  The kids had fun eating the fruits and veggies and learned more about the food as they used them.  One girl voluntarily tried a carrot for the first time.

These recipes aren’t just for kids; I also enjoyed making and sharing a Healthy Pineapple with my friend who brought her son.  We also learned fun facts like: Did You Know? A strawberry has over 500 seeds!

Multi-task:

Classes like these are a great alternative to your regular Saturday routine.

Make the most of your time by grocery shopping, eating lunch, hanging out, reading a magazine, using the free wi-fi, and spending some time chatting with your little company for the day.  There are so many ways to entertain the family at WholeFoods and encourage healthy living.

Kendall and Jillian had a blast cooking, eating and learning about their healthy treats.  I got hugs, high-fives, and thank-you’s for the entire WholeFoods experience!  See a little bit of our day in the video below.
