Where is the Fun?
Tonight I went to a Division I Men’s Basketball game and something was missing… Although, the dancers, band, mascot and fans where all at the arena, there was still an overwhelming absence that noticed on the floor. The fun and happiness was gone. Where was it?!
I noticed this when a big play was made in favor of the home team and the players that were involved in this play, walked (sans hustle) to the set up the next play with the biggest, brightest, scowl on their faces. Their demeanor was aggressive and defensive at an unnecessary point of the game. That’s when I wondered, “Are they even having fun?” Has the cheering and praise for a teammate, good play, or lucky call gone away? Where is it? Why the attitude. Does the pressure of winning decrease the ability to simply play a sport for the love of the game? Is it a guy thing? Have you noticed it?
It is important to be mindful of the purpose of sports and physical activities. How can we bring fun and joy back to all sports?

It’s not a guy thing. One of the top womens bball players in the country got suspended last year for punching an opponenet in the face. It’s about ultra (some may say over) competitiveness. With college sports becoming more and more of a big business, the days of amateurism and playing for “the love of the game” may be behind us. Just my 2 cents…
That’s sad, but very true. I think it would take a change in culture starting from youth sports…. no wait, the PARENTS!
Thanks for response, MD!
